Last At The Cross, First At The Tomb

John 19:25; 20:1-18

On resurrection Sunday, nearly 2000 years ago, there were many likely candidates who could have been given the honor to be the first to see the risen Lord: the Roman Emperor, the Jewish Sanhedrin, or even the Apostles. But none of these people were the first to witness the risen Christ. Instead, God chose an obscure woman, Mary Magdalene, to be the first to see and share the good news of His resurrection.

I.  Her Sorrow

  • A. She was overcome with emotion.
  • B. Jesus had changed her life dramatically!
  • C. She was a servant of Christ.
  • D. What about us?
  • II.  Her Surprise

  • E. She was looking for a dead Jesus.
  • F. Many today misunderstand the truth about Jesus.
  • III.  Her Supreme Joy

  • G. John 20:17 – "Stop clinging to me."
  • H. "Go and tell my brethren."
  • From Mary’s life we learn what Jesus can do for anyone who is willing to submit to His Lordship. Her life was dark and hopeless; Jesus gave her light, purpose, joy, and peace. We also learn from Mary what anyone can do for Christ if one is committed to Him. She was loyal, courageous, dedicated, and faithful. Have we allowed Jesus to change our lives? Are we serving Him with our best efforts? Will you start today? Don’t wait another day --- there may not be another day!
