"Firm Reliance on Divine Providence"
Ps. 33:12-22
228 years ago today, 55 brave men, leaders of the 13 original colonies of
our nation, signed the Declaration of Independence. And in this document of
freedom, they declared their "firm reliance on Divine Providence" to give
them support. A few years later these men and others prepared our
Constitution, which is still the guiding legal document of our great nation.
Today, we want to consider some of the phrases from the Preamble to the
Constitution and how they are influenced by the very words of God.
"Establish justice"
A. Justice is a foundational principle of our nation.
B. Many today have perverted justice (Deut. 16:18-20)
C. Evil must be punished (I Pet. 2:13-14)
"Insure domestic tranquility"
D. A just government must provide civil peace.
E. Pray for our leaders (I Tim. 2:1-4)
F. Domestic peace and godliness
"To provide for the common defense"
G. Rom. 13:1-7
H. "Trust God, and keep your powder dry."
"To promote the general welfare"
I. Christians should help others.
J. The government should help the helpless.
"To secure the blessings of liberty."
K. Freedom --- our #1 blessing from God and the government
L. Not absolute freedom (I Pet. 2:16)
We have been a blessed nation. But God is still able to bring down those
who reject His grace and His ways. What about you? Do you respect and
embrace His grace, or do you reject it?
